The books are too short. They're written in simple, clear language. They're written by deviants who forged their own way. They could only be disruptive.
And with any luck at all, every curious student would have an unyielding desire to learn more, and they'll devour the books on their own accord.
Could such a reverse-psychology ploy work? I really don't know. But it's worth a try, even if the kids see though the guise.
I can't wait until the timing is right to forbid these books from my children.
Well, moving URLs. I opened my vox account with the username dlma, because that's the domain I own. But dblume is really my most transparent and discoverable online ID.
dblume.vox.com was still available, so I check my profile, and vox does indeed have a single-click way for me to move my account, and have my previous location forward to the new one.
Awesome! How easy was that? Now the question is: if I post from my new account, does it still successfully propagate to my friends' neighborhoods?
Are you getting your 10 free moo cards?
RIP Kurt Vonnegut. I didn't read Slaughterhouse-Five until I was an adult. Maybe that was for the better. The book left a permanent impression, and I better appreciated the choruses and the "plant-connect" analogies while I was reading it.
Kurt raised my awareness of the Dresden bombings the way Isao Takahata did so of the Tokyo fire bombings.
Thanks, Kurt. Your work was special and continues to affect us.
I've loved reading this meme from people of my friends' list. And having theoretically been tagged:
1. One book I wish everyone would read: "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!"
2. I'd sell our wedding china on Craig's List if my wife would let me. I'd value the space that was freed up more than the china. I'd counsel my children to be more practical than we were, on that point.
3. I have a deep appreciation for the algorithmic complexity behind simple seamless experiences like line rider. (I dabbled in 2D physics and collision detection, too.) I'm jealous that I didn't do it first!
4. I've turned down a job offer worth more money and options to stay where I am. A large element of that decision was to stay close to dear friends at work. I know what makes me happy.
5. I'm partially deaf in one ear (I can't hear some of the lower frequencies). I'm always having to crane my better ear towards those whispering things to me. Somehow, my enjoyment of sound and music doesn't suffer, even though I know logically, that I'm missing "details" in that ear.
I've got most of the Ah! My Goddess trade paperbacks. And I don't even like Harem/Romantic-Comedy Genre manga. I don't even like one of the main characters, Belldandy. The series is simply too saccharine for my taste.
But I can't resist Kosuke Fujishima's art and design. He's got a genuine panache for both fabric and mechanics. It's for that reason that I even love You're Under Arrest.
Now, I've heard of "Sakura Wars" way back when it was just a video game. And I completely ignored it through its rise in pop culture. Ain't no way I'm going to watch anything based on a video game. (That doesn't have Angelina Jolie or Milla Jovovich in it.)
But watching some old anime, I sit through a trailer of the Sakura Wars TV series, and there are those ears. Those weird sticking-straight-out-of-their-heads-Kosuke-Fujishima-ears. That's the other thing that is particular to him. They kind of bug me, but what are you going to do?
So, here I am, giving an old TV show based on an older video game a chance, despite my better instinct. Simply because of the character designer. Let's hope there was something to the phenomenon it was in Japan.
Speaking of Gainax, I haven't ripped my favorite song from Evangelion from CD until just yesterday. It's hidden on CD2 of Symphony of Evangelion, and it's a Rap version of Canon.
That CD has a couple of versions of Canon, but I really enjoy this one. The CD is almost 10 years old now, but I love this tune as much now as I did when I first heard it.
